Rosette Tutorial

Making a fabric rosette is really pretty simple.  You can tack it together with glue or thread, and make one up in a matter of minutes.  Here’s what to do-

The photos really make it look more complicated than it is!  All you’re really doing is twisting a length of fabric with your left hand, rolling it a half turn with your right, then repeating until your fabric is used up.   I’ll add the nitty gritties for you just to make sure you know what you’re doing- but don’t be intimidated by the twelve steps!

1- cut  a long strip of fabric and iron it in half so you have a strip just as long, but half as wide with the right sides of the fabric showing.  (for the rosette shown above I used a 2″ by 18″ strip of fabric that made a rosette about 2″ across)  Ironing the fabric in half isn’t entirely necessary, but I like how it gives the flower a little cleaner look.  If I hadn’t ironed my strips I would have started with a strip 1″ wide instead of 2″.

2- With the ironed side of the strip up, fold the top right corner of the fabric down into a triangle.

3- Fold that triangle in half.

4- Holding the folded triangle in place with your right hand, use your left hand to twist the fabric towards you.  You’ll want to twist it so that the side that started in front goes all the way around and ends in front again (the photo shows me in mid-twist)

5- Roll the triangle in your right hand into the twisted fabric.

6- Tack your work in place with a needle and thread or some glue.

7-9 Repeat steps 4, 5 and 6, twisting the fabric with your left hand and then rolling the center of the flower into the twist to create more petals.  Don’t forget to secure your work by either hand sewing or gluing each time you roll your flower.

10- Continue in this manner and watch as your flower grows!

11- Stop when you have just a bit of fabric left on your strip.

12- Fold the end of your fabric strip to the back of the flower and tack it in place so no one can see it!

You’re done!  The first flower might feel a little awkward but keep at it- you’ll be surprised how easy these can be once you allow yourself to relax and enjoy the process!
